CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND COMPOSITON
Rutin, also referred to as rutoside or quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, is a flavonol glycoside that consists of the flavonoid quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose. It belongs to the bioflavonoid category and occurs naturally in various plants. The richest natural source of rutin is the dried flower buds of the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica). Other sources include buckwheat, citrus fruits, apples, tea, Ginkgo biloba, and asparagus, though typically in lower concentrations.
Rutin, chemically known as quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, has the molecular formula C₂₇H₃₀O₁₆ and a molecular weight of 610.52 g/mol. It appears as a yellow or pale yellow powder and exhibits slight solubility in water, while being more soluble in ethanol and alkaline solutions. The compound has a melting point of approximately 214–215°C, where it decomposes at higher temperatures
Rutin is commonly available in standard purity levels of ≥95% or ≥98%, depending on its intended use. Analytical methods such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) are typically employed to ensure its quality and concentration. In formulations, it is often prepared as a fine powder, which is sometimes micronized to improve bioavailability.
APPLICATIONS
Renowned for its unique combination of vascular-strengthening, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, rutin has become a prized ingredient in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical formulations. This potent flavonoid demonstrates particular efficacy in:
Capillary integrity and venous health – clinically shown to reduce edema and improve microcirculation
Oxidative stress management – powerful free radical scavenging activity exceeding standard antioxidants
Synergistic nutrient absorption – enhances bioavailability of vitamin C and other actives
Applications span targeted supplements for vascular support, advanced skincare for redness reduction, and functional foods designed for metabolic health – making rutin a versatile phytonutrient for holistic wellness approaches.
